WVI -West Flanders Intermunicipal Association – shares its ‘best practices’ at the Interreg European Policy Learning Platform

On 8 and 9 May, WVI went to Eupen to share its experience in intermunicipal cooperation within the framework of the European Covenant of Mayors. Together with experts from Germany, Finland and Italy, WVI helped the German speaking Community in Belgium to enforce the existing intermunicipal cooperation. This exchange is made possible through the  European Policy Learning Platform of the Interreg Europe programme, that brings a group of experts together based on a concrete request for exchange.

Since 2015, WVI cooperates with 4 groups of engaged municipalities in West Flanders within the Covenant of Mayors to reduce carbon emissions on their territory. This resulted in energy action plans until 2020. For the pilot region ‘Klimaatoverleg Midwest’ WVI are now in the process of scaling up the energy plan 2020 to a climate plan 2030 within the Covenant of Mayors 2030 that focusses on the prevention of and adaptation to climate change. For this process, WVI received funding through the PentaHelix project within the European H2020 programme.

The learning process WVI went through, the way to involve stakeholders, the cooperation with a nucleus group per group of municipalities and the experiences from PentaHelix, drew the attention of the Learning Platform. The exchange of knowledge was interesting for all present parties and also WVI  could strenghten its way of working.
